Team Logic

These last two weekends have been two of the most enlightening, heartwarming and amazing weekends of my life. Here’s why..

I was part of an initiative whose motive was to hand out Qur’aans in the streets of our country. We handed out Qur’aans in English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, Sesotho, Portugese and Chichewa to the local people of Orange Farm, Eldorado Park, Attridgeville, Mayfair, Alexandra and Soweto.

The intention was for us to teach them about Islam, to give them insight into our religion, to call them towards it and to fulfil our duty to spread the message of Nabi ﷺ. But I promise you, I’m pretty sure I learnt more than anything else.

Here’s what I learnt:

  1. Islam unites. Our group of volunteers became a family with a shared purpose: to give dawah.
  2. We are so so so so blessed. We have more than we need and definitely more than we deserve. There’s so many people out there who have absolutely nothing. Oh Allah, forgive us if we have ever been ungrateful.
  3. You really don’t know what someone is going through. We may think that our problems are catastrophic but we need to make shukr for them, our worries don’t include wondering where we’re going to get our next meal from.
  4. Don’t judge anyone. Appearances are deceiving and it isn’t the whole picture. You never know what’s in someone’s heart and when you find out, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised.
  5. There’s hope for our generation, we aren’t as lost as everyone thinks we are and we have a lot of potential to do better and to be better.
  6. The best way to make a difference is one step at a time, one person at a time, one idea at a time. This entire Qur’aan initiative started with a conversation between friends who just wanted to make a difference in the communities around them.
  7. We live a very different (and perhaps a very sheltered) life compared to everyone else. They are so content with so little while we are constantly chasing the latest phone, the latest car and even the latest sneaker.
  8. It’s the little things that matter. We were so touched at the hospitality that was received wherever we went. In Alexandra, the uncle from the Alex Dawah Centre went out, bought us pizza and cold drinks and laid out mats on the floor so we could have a little feast before we left for home.
  9. Nothing can bring you as much happiness, make you feel like you have a purpose and truly feel content in your heart as doing something solely for the pleasure of Allah.
  10. We are so lucky to have Islam as our religion.

“This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.” (5:3)

“Charity erases sins just as water extinguishes fire.” – Nabi ﷺ.

May Allah accept from everyone and make these small acts of charity a means of salvation for us on the day we need it most.

To my “bha family”

It has honestly been the greatest pleasure meeting and getting to know all of you. From listening to the local women’s stories, walking the streets of Eldorado Park and navigating through traffic in Alexandra to playing table tennis and 8 ball pool, having lunch at Al-Hamra and racing on the highway. These last two weekends were rewarding in more ways than I can count and I definitely made memories to last a lifetime. You have all become my family and I’m so excited for all the new, exciting projects to come. May Allah reward you all in this world and the next. We are so blessed to have been picked by Allah Ta’alah to be a part of this amazing initiative.
